The collection and identification of Benthic Macro Invertebrates (BMI) from the streams of the Chippewa River Watershed is another viable tool for monitoring water quality. Benthic Macro Invertebrates are organisms that lack backbones and are large enough to be seen without a microscope. Basically, the bugs found in the river.

The BMI Biomonitoring Network is a collaboration between project staff, teachers and high school students. Biomonitoring is an inexpensive and highly educational tool for determining water quality.

CRWP staff spend time with students and staff prepping for the monitoring with classroom presentations, participate in a field day to collect the specimens and spend class time identifying the BMIs.

Thanks to all the schools that have partipated in the past and we look forward to working with you again.
