Alternative Tile Intakes

Drainage has been and continues to play an extremely valuable role in the ability for farmers to raise crops in the Chippewa River Watershed. However, traditional open tile intakes or surface inlets can have unintended consequences of increased sediment and phosphorus contributions to our streams, ditches, lakes and rivers.

Today there are several options available as an "alternative" to the open intake. These options are intended to maintain drainage benefits while providing water quality protection.

Cost-share may be available up to 75% for the design and installation.

Benefits of Alternative Tile Intakes

Ease of Operation
Adequate drainage with positive crop response
Improve water quality from reduced sediment and nutrient delivery
Decreased ditch clean out cost and assessments

Alternative Intake Options

Rock Inlets or Blind Intakes: This design involves digging a trench, placing a drainage pipe at its bottom and filling the trench with small rock

Localized Intensive Pattern Tiling: This design involves the removal of the open surface intake and replacing it with the installation of subsurface drainage tile lines in a very tight pattern or coiled configuration.

Hickenbottom Intake: This technique is replacing an open intake with a perforated riser.
